Got Questions

Got Questions?

Ask God

James 1:5 (NLT) If you need wisdom- if you want to know what God wants you to do- ask him, and he will gladly tell you. He will not resent you for asking.

Psalm 119:2 (NLT) Happy are those who obey his decrees and search for him with all their hearts.

Got Questions?

We’re naturally inquisitive people.  We like to have answers to our questions.  The meteoric rise and popularity of the internet means that we can look up any number of topics.  That’s why Google has turned out to be such a great tool.  Where else can we get the recipe for curry chicken, learn the steps needed to register to vote, and ask questions about our favorite celebrities?  Inquiring minds want to know!

Despite popular belief, Google can’t do it all.  The questions that reside in our hearts can’t be purely and completely addressed in an online search.  Instead we get the responses we need to the issues we face when we deliberately search for God.

If we dig a little deeper we learn that to ‘search’ is to “make inquisition,” to “question,” or “to ask” (biblehub.com).

What does all of that mean?  God very clearly wants us to ask Him questions.  He wants us to bring our curiosities straight to Him.  God wants us to be informed and in the process of asking we’ll build relationship with Him.  How do we know that?  Because Psalm 119:2 says that we are “happy” when we obey Him and search for Him and James 1:5 tells us that He will gladly tell us what we need to know.  When we ask God questions He will engage with us, answer us, and bless our efforts.

The act of searching for God allows us to know more about Him.  Embedded in the process is a drawing of us into deeper levels of relationship with Him.  Our “Aha” moments build our faith as we ‘inquire’ about what God is doing and what He wants us to do.  As we delve into the conversation, we begin to hear ourselves utter “Hmm” as we gain another level of ‘knowing’, then we might say, “No way!,”  “Get outa here!,” or “That’s amazing!” when we experience a light bulb moment regarding an issue we’re dealing with that becomes clearer to us.

We can inquire about whatever we might want to now, but the way we ask does matter.  We must ask God questions with humility and respect.   If we’ve made a habit of asking, ‘Why is this happening to me?,’ it exposes our belief that He doesn’t know what He’s doing or that He’s made a mistake in our case.  It’s like a pot questioning the Hands that made it (Isaiah 45:9).  Instead, a question like, “What are you trying to show me?’ or “What do you want me to see in this situation?” opens up a world of possibility in our hearts and makes us available and positioned to understand and respond to His answer.

What Can We Do?

We can generate questions that matter to our hearts by:

    • Learning scripture
    • Using our dictionaries and concordance (actual or online)
    • Joining a small group bible study(bible.org)
    • Attending a virtual (or live) Sunday School class
    • Starting a new topical devotional
    • Talking to friends and family members of like mind
    • Asking for and accepting ongoing accountability from more seasoned people

We are free to can ask God whatever comes to mind.  It’s not like He doesn’t know what we’re thinking, right?  The questions may feel corny, but they have great value.  There’s no magic trick.  Just ask.

I’ll start us off with a few questions as we learn to search for God:

    • What’s my purpose?
    • How do you want to me to use my skills?
    • What changes do you want me to make?
    • When do you want me to step out and do what I feel drawn to do?

Now, it’s your turn.  Ask away! He’s ready to respond.

Let's Pray

Lord, Thank you for the gift of the question.  Teach us how to search for you by asking the questions that help us understand more about you and life.  And in the asking, we’re grateful that you will respond and we’ll know more about you and ourselves.

In Jesus Name,
Amen

Live well,
Michele

  1. Amen! Thank you for this reminder today, Chele! Yes, God wants us to come to Him. There is no question that He can’t answer and NOTHING is too hard for Him. Lord, please remind me that I can ask you anything and You are patiently waiting for me to seek You first.

  2. Michele, what a “golden nugget” for our life’s journey! Yes, we do forget that God is our Father, and, like any Father, He is there to answer our questions and nurture our roots to grow deeper in His Way and Word. Brenda
