Made By Design

Psalm 139:13-14 (AMP)

For You formed my innermost parts; You knit me [together] in my mother’s womb.  I will give thanks and praise to You, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made; And my soul knows it very well.

DEVOTIONAL

Adult women have a lot of life priorities that negatively impact the way they live their lives and care for themselves.  In fact, there are physical, emotional, and psychological changes that can make it challenging to keep our thoughts about ourselves moving in the right direction.

We were “fearfully and wonderfully made” by design, at conception and for the length of our lives.  God gave us everything He wanted us to have to live the way He’s equipped us to live.  That means that we can celebrate our skin color, hair type, body shape, abilities and skills, personality, financial realities, and roles in work and family spaces.  We can celebrate and affirm everything we are- right now- and give God thanks with the true understanding that He didn’t make a mistake when He made us.

Psalm 139:17 (AMP)

How precious are Your thoughts to me, O God! How vast is the sum of them!

David held God’s point-of-view in high esteem.  What God thought of him mattered and helped to form his thoughts about himself.  David realized how intentional God had been about his existence.  God wanted David and demonstrated that by taking the time to “knit” him together.  In so doing, God didn’t just snap His fingers and make David appear (which was certainly an option).  Instead, The Master Weaver took the time to design an extraordinarily complex human result.  God knew David’s personality, physical form, tendencies, sins, troubles, weaknesses and victories.  He knew it all and still thought this complicated and inconsistent man was worth the investment of time and effort.

The same is true for us.  The work He did to create us is described as “remarkable” and “wonderful”.  God actually celebrates us.  We were made by design, on purpose, for purpose, and with purpose.  We are extraordinary, uncommon, and striking.  Even our flaws are worth celebrating. It’s in our best interest to accept the way God views us as individuals and  begin (or continue) to see ourselves the same way.

Healthy self-esteem can be rough to grab hold of and maintain.  We can think of ourselves in the healthiest way through the lens and power of the Holy Spirit.

  • Ask God to lead you through a time of discovery and affirmation.  Be open to developing a balanced, wholistic view of who your are and how God made you.
  • Ask people you trust to tell you about the strengths they see in you.  Then ask God to help you take it all in and accept what you’ve heard.
  • At the endo of the week, consider 1 or 2 personal goals you should develop for yourself to help you live a God-honoring and personally affirming life.  Commit those items to prayer and expect God’s response.
  • Let this be a time of gratitude for who you are and how you’ve been created (not a time to compare yourself to others!).
  • Try to focus on yourself without over-spiritualizing this. God wants you to have a healthy perspective about who you are.
  • If a particular topic is more difficult for you to talk about (e.g., those hips!), it’s probably an area you should delve deeper into (maybe a professional can help).
  • Don’t shy away when it’s hard to celebrate what you’ve learned to dislike over the years.  Read the support verses in this blog post or read others you’re drawn to.  God will help you do this well as you focus on getting to know yourself and your Creator better.

PRAYER

Lord, What You think about us matters.  It’s in our best interest to see ourselves from Your perspective.  So, we don’t have permission to see ourselves as less than what You’ve decided we are.  Thank You for being so wonderfully intentional.

In Jesus’ Name,
Amen

Live well,
Michele
