There's Power in the Pause

James 1:19 (NLT)

My dear brothers and sisters, be quick to listen, slow to speak, and slow to get angry.

DEVOTIONAL

The parental warning to “think before you speak” is full of wisdom because there’s power in the pause.  When we pause before speaking we give ourselves the opportunity to consider what we should say, before we say it, and with fewer regrets once it’s out.

We all know someone who’s just a little too quick with an opinion or comment.  When they say something we clearly know they shouldn’t have said a word.  The same is true for us and it’s worth praying for self-control in this area.

We have to love people enough to be careful with what and when we say whatever we decide to say. When we wait to speak we have time to reconsider our position, check the details of the situation before saying anything, reduce the tension that may be present, decide to encourage instead of judge or chastise, or  simply say nothing.

There are definitely times when it’s best to  talk to God rather than the person we’d like to give ‘our piece of our minds’.  He hears our outbursts of “I just can’t!”, “Jesus, help me!” and “Thank you, Lord!” and sends peace and instructions.  In that personal space between our lips and our words, He responds in a way that keeps us focused, strengthened and out of trouble.

When we chose to listen rather than speak, we occupy a position that allows us to hear Him more clearly.  And when we’re aware enough to tone down the chatter, we can appreciate the safety of the pause.

PRAYER

Lord, teach us to honor You with our words and even with our silence.  Help us to speak when we have words that will heal, encourage, and inspire.

In Jesus’ Name,
Amen

Live well,
Michele
