What Does It Mean to be Good?

1 Corinthians 10:23 (NIV)

You say, “I am allowed to do anything”–but not everything is good for you. You say, “I am allowed to do anything”–but not everything is beneficial.

DEVOTIONAL

Kermit the Frog says, “It’s not easy being green.”  It’s not easy to go against the grain and do the less popular thing.  Just because everyone else does it, doesn’t make it right for you, and just because few will do a thing doesn’t mean you shouldn’t.  What’s right for you and I is seldom right for everyone else because we are deliberately peculiar (1 Peter 2:9).

Oswald Chambers tells us that “the good is the enemy of the best”.  So, what does it mean to be good?  And, why isn’t good good enough?

There are lots of opportunities to do good things-  share with people, take care of people, give advice, support charities, etc.  But we do our best when our motives are in check.  Our good deeds are worthwhile when they measure up to God’s desires for us.  Only He knows what’s truly good to do.

Following the pack because we’re scared to stand out, discover and use our gifts, look odd to others, or be identified with Christ is no way to live.  Why run from the One who knows the outcome?  Why avoid the One who knows us best?

Asking ourselves a few additional questions can help us stay on track:

    • Will God be honored if I do this thing?
    • Will others be impacted in a positive way?
    • Are others drawn to Christ because of this decision I’m considering?
    • Does this help me to do and be my best self?
    • Am I acting out of love or selfishness?

We should pursue and execute plans, actions, thoughts, and words that are not just good, but right.  It’s not the popular way to respond, but serves as a barrier to us getting in our own way, sabotaging the best outcome, and corroding our witness.  And, when we make less than ideal decisions (which is bound to happen, by the way), He’s still willing and able to bless our outcomes because of His grace and our desire to obey, surrender and defer to His plans for us.

PRAYER

Lord, Honoring you is not just a notion.  We need to think about the way we do what we do and why we make the kinds of decisions we make.  Teach us what it means to be good in your sight.

In Jesus’ Name,
Amen

Live well,
Michele

  1. Have you ever thought about adding a little bit more than just your articles?

I mean, what you say is valuable and all. Nevertheless just imagine if you added some great
images or video clips to give your posts more, “pop”! Your content is excellent but
with images and clips, this website could definitely be one of the most beneficial in its field.
    Superb blog!
