Make Plans

Proverbs 16:9 (CSB)

A person’s heart plans his way, but the Lord determines his steps.

Jeremiah 10:23 (CSB)

I know, Lord, that a person’s way of life is not his own; no one who walks determines his own steps.

DEVOTIONAL

When we live and are led by God’s grace, we can make plans and trust Him to guide us.  The key to moving forward is to stay within God’s whispering distance, always remaining open to His direction.  He’s faithful to tell us when, where, and how to move or retreat, but we must be willing to listen.  As we act, we do so understanding and accepting that He may change the plan or not allow it at all.  Regardless, His response is our protection.

“Few people have any next, they live from hand to mouth without a plan, and are always at the end of their line” (Ralph Waldo Emerson, poet).  To live well we need our ‘next’.  We need to establish plans that stir our hearts into action, even if the action is one small step-at-a-time.

Shakespeare reminds us that, “There’s a divinity that shapes our ends…”  We need God.  We need His correction and direction.  Life is too short to do things that lead us to the emptiness of self-directed success. When we go to Him we are recognizing that everything goes through Him.  He can direct what we do and where we go.  It’s the plan that leaves us humble, usable, enlightened and fulfilled.

A wise woman craves direction.  She recognizes her need for counsel and guidance to avoid catastrophe and regret.  She knows that we are at His disposal, to will and to do whatever He pleases with our matters (Philippians 2:13).  He can endorse or allow any plan we make, but ultimately His will prevails.

We can learn to make God-honoring plans when we:

  1. Start with prayer.  Tell God what you sense or have in mind.  He will listen.
  2. Surrender control.  Be open to the lessons He will teach you as you follow His direction.
  3. Get busy.  Even if your steps are small and unsteady, do something that looks like a plan and watch it take shape.
  4. Be nimble.  Remind yourself that God is in control and could change any aspect of the plan at any time.

Our true goal should be to live in obedience, moving forward with plans that are committed to His direction.  And so, we make plans that are bathed in prayer, open to His will and guarded by His favor.

Prayer

Lord,
We’re not always sure of what to do or when to get started.  We need clarity and direction.  Teach us how to take a step and trust You to provide the guidance, resources, time and opportunities that continue to move us in Your direction.

In Jesus’ Name,
Amen

Live well,
Michele

  1. Amen Michele. Some people are sitting and twiddling their thumbs asking God “what shall I do.” Plans must be made, steps must be taken and as the plans are acted upon, God guides, provides and decides the what, where and how? After praying and acknowledging Him first, then we must get up and get to work on putting our plans into action according to His will.
