RUN FOR YOUR LIFE

Matthew 11: 28-29 (NLT)

Then he said, “Come to me, all of you who are weary and carry heavy burdens, and I will give you rest.  Take my yoke upon you.  Let me teach you, because I am humble and gentle, and you will find rest for your souls.”

DEVOTIONAL

Whenever we hear the term ‘run for your life’ we tend to think of a person running from danger.  But there’s a kind of emergent action that shouldn’t focus on what we’re running from.  Instead, it broadcasts a safe place to run toward.

When our hearts are overwhelmed, we can ask God to “lead me to the rock that is higher than I (Psalm 61:2)”.  We can search for Him and run to Him for our shelter and care.  When grief grips, children lose their minds, spouses leave, work fails, money flies away, and friends turn left, we may begin to feel desperate, anxious and alone.  That’s the very time we need to run to God.

Running can look like prayer, praise, getting quiet, talking with a faithful friend, crying out to God, or reading scripture.  When we run for our spiritual lives we become focused and everything else falls into place.

What does that mean?  It’s the time when you come fact-to-face with the reality that you can’t do life well without God.  It’s when you literally and figuratively throw your hands up and let Him know that He’s completely in charge.  It’s the moment you realize that everything you’ve tried to do not only didn’t work, but has actually made things worse.

Life can be hard and exhausting.  We need a place of rest and we need a God to handle all of our “stuff”.  Just like the runner at the starting block, we need to get our sprint on and get to our place of safety and abandon.

We can’t manage all of the nonsense, the unexpecteds, and the other stuff that people try to put on us without the love, direction, strength and safety of God.  It’s just not possible.  So today, run for your life and keep pursuing the God who’s got you.

PRAYER

Lord, The world is not a safe place.  Thank you for being the place where we can go for all of the care we need.  We want to be closer to you now than we’ve ever been before.

In Jesus’ Name,
Amen

Live well,
Michele
