NEVERTHELESS!

Psalm 46:1-3 (ESV)

God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble.  Therefore we will not fear though the earth give way, though the mountains be moved into the heart of the sea, though its waters roar and foam, though the mountains tremble at it swelling.

DEVOTIONAL

What an encouraging psalm!  We’re reminded that regardless of what we go through, we have the hope of God’s help.  We don’t have to be overcome with fear, sorrow or anxiety because He’s present through every circumstance.  In fact, He’s at work before we know what He’s doing.  He is a nevertheless God!

The sky could be falling around us and yet we can have the same confidence the authors of this song displayed.  Their lineage was chosen but their father, Korah, rebelled against God.  Despite his woeful stance, his sons would learn to honor God and would even write a number of beautiful and inspiring psalms (https://www.gotquestions.org/sons-of-Korah.html).  They would share from the depths of their gratitude about a God who did not hold them accountable for their father’s sin.  They penned verses from an attitude of faithfulness, recognizing God’s handiwork and awesome power.  And, although the earth did in fact “give way” to swallow their defiant father, that very same God would restore their family’s reputation and reward their humility.

We can move beyond whatever issues plague our past by focusing on the God who responds to our hearts.  We don’t have to continue wrong patterns, accept labels given by people, believe the lies we’ve been told, or be limited by others’ opinions.  We serve a God who moves mountains and relocates ornery bosses.  He sends the sea into roaring action and listens to our earnest prayers.  And so often, He has brought joy in the midst of our troubles.

We can know God intimately and grow in grace despite what may have happened to us.  We can trust Him to take care of us, restore our honor, rebuild our emotions and reputations, and bless our generations.  No matter how things my look, we can embrace a ‘nevertheless’ attitude as we trust our ‘in spite of everything’ God.  Come what may, our Loving Father has been, and promises to continue to be, present to protect and provide.

Prayer

Lord, It’s so easy to be distracted by what’s happened to us and take our eyes off of how you’ve kept us.  Thank you for being an ever present God, who did not look away as we endured difficulty.  You have removed barriers, provided care and encouragement, sent people to help us, and directed our course.  We don’t have to be afraid to move forward.  You will be our safe place now and in the days to come.

 In Jesus’ Name,
Amen

Live well,
Michele
